General Liability Insurance
As prescribed by Article 1779 of the Civil Law of the Republic of Latvia – “Everyone has a duty to compensate for losses they have caused through their acts or failure to act”. Thus, if a person causes damages to the property of a third party or damage to the health or life of a third party, she or he has a duty to compensate for the caused losses in full.
Some examples of typical cases in the private sector:
- a tenant forgets to disconnect water supply to a dish washing machine, the hose breaks and the apartment below is flooded;
- a pedestrian or a cyclist causes a road traffic accident;
- a pedestrian slips and falls down because the pavement is not cleaned of snow and covered with sand;
- a customer damages some goods at a store;
- property damage or injuries caused to friends or relatives (for example, when using a grill, fondue, etc.);
- as regards sports activities (for example, a skier causes injuries to another skier by colliding with him);
- a dog attacks and bites a passer-by;
- civil liability of the insured against losses caused by a person who is the subject of civil liability of the insured, e.g. his or her minor child breaks a neighbour’s window when playing football.
General civil liability insurance can protect you from unexpected and probable expenses.
With civil liability insurance, BTA not only indemnifies for the losses, but also compensates court expenses and other expenses related to claim adjustment.
