The Latvian legislation requires that all members of road traffic must have their Inland Motor Vehicle Owners' Compulsory Third Party Liability insured.

A united Bonus-Malus system came into force on January 1, 2006. The functionality and the use of the system has been governed by the regulations of the Motor Insurers' Bureau of Latvia since November 17, 2005.

Since January 1, 2004 when Latvia joined the European Union, the cover limits have been significantly increased:

  1. for personal damage to third parties - up to EUR 350 000 for every affected person, but no more than EUR 2 500 000 for an accident;
  2. for damage to third party's property - up to EUR 100 000 independently of the number of parties involved

All the damage the policyholder inflicts on third parties will be covered by BTA - your insurance company.
